When Life Hands You Lemons

You know what they say to do WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS.....

As two women designing a clothing line based out of Hawaii, a state where fashion is definitely not a focus and resources are limited, it can sometimes feel like we have been handed an entire lemon tree. “Fabric is scarce” - that was expected. “Manufacturers are non-existent” - this was undeniable. However, our significant roadblock has been in our pursuit to find a patternmaker. For several months, our search has been ongoing and all we have found is a hundred people who can follow a pattern, but not many that can create one.

After several bumps in the road, we started simplifying our designs in hopes that someone would be able to help us if our designs were “easy”.  We began to wonder... would our line see its first collection? The answer was clear; we needed to explore patternmakers outside of Hawaii. We were hesitant at first, considering that this option might welcome more errors, as we wouldn't be able to communicate with the patternmaker in person. But no matter what, the bottom line is this: we will do whatever it takes to make this collection happen, even if we have to travel to work with our patternmaker or learn to create the patterns ourselves!

Here we are...lemons squeezed, pitcher prepped.....and ready for what's next. Raise your glasses, then take a sip….it’s gonna be oh so delicious!!

Wandering the West Coast with Shay & Ingi

♥Ready, JET-SET, Go!!!♥

And off we went to wander the cities of So Cal on a week long mission to find the softest, most luxurious fabrics. Throughout the week, we had lots of fun times and a few not so fun times....but overall, we accomplished exactly what we set out to do! With the help of our favorite GPS, that we fondly named “Barb”, we navigated our way from Los Angeles to Laguna Beach.

For hours, we strolled through the fabric-filled streets of L.A.'s fashion district to showroom after showroom at L.A.’s notorious Textile convention. We were like two kids in a candy store, handpicking our favorite textiles and getting giddy with visions of finalized pieces ; )

All energized and inspired, we kept busy attending trend-forecasting seminars, visiting super chic boutiques, and researching manufacturers and dye houses.


The questions remain… Should we design our own print? What color palette is ideal for our first collection? Should we incorporate the trends of the season? There are so many things to consider...so many possibilities!


Whatever details we decide, in the end it’s all about creating a collection of pieces that truly excite and inspire women...pieces that make them go WOW! Sights set high as we reach for the stars one step at a time!

With our samples in the making as well as meetings with manufacturers and the textile show approaching, there is so much work to be done.
